FRANCE TRAVEL Peter Mayle started it all with "A Year in Provence." Inspiring Rick Steves, the Lonely Planet crew and all the France Travel Guidebook creators that were to follow. One guy who was not influenced by these fine folks, was the Author of this book. Simply because, at that time, he didn't know they existed! But not to worry. San Francisco Film Maker Christopher Strong had his own "Tour de France" dream. To spontaneously cycle the French Country backroads. With no fixed itinerary. Tasting the land and the people as well as the food and wine. FRANCE FOR DUMMIES And so finally, after a week of irregular and informal French Lessons from a Dutch friend, with no regard for the niceties of French Grammar, Christopher's French Vocabulary was limited to five words "hello", "goodbye", "please", "thank you", and the essential "where's the toilet?" FRENCH KISS In spite of, or perhaps because of his lack of French Language smarts, with no butt saving French Phrasebook, Christopher's first "Tour de France" was a resounding personal success. Even on the French Riviera! FRANCE TRAVEL GUIDE - MORE THAN A YEAR IN PROVENCE Inspired by the overwhelming hospitality lavished upon him, Christopher decided to return and film his next adventure. He did. And he continued, year after year. Until finally he had an up close and personal lifestyle/adventure series - "Bicycle Gourmet's Treasures of France." An authentic view of France Today. FRENCH HISTORY After seeing the first results of Christopher's "Tour de France" filming, his friends, not suprisingly, suggested he write a book. Not a book on French Cooking or (shudder) French Diet mind you, but a "behind the scenes" account of his filming adventures. And his many encounters with French Wine. This is that book.

This is a great book to read. But an even better book to listen to. It's narrated by the Author who..well...I know this is cliche...."makes the book come alive." The combination of the tone of his voice and the incredible stories he tells really makes you feel that you're there with him.And he is funny. Not standup comedien funny, but dry sarcastic funny. 0ften self-directed. Although he has a great voice, it's his relaxed delivery, and asides that keep you engaged. For instance, when you know how something is going to turn out he says "you're ahead of me already, aren't you?"
Little personal touches like this make you feel the Author is an old pal fresh from these adventures, who's sharing them over a beer. Or in his case - probably a glass of wine! (lol)
I do a lot of driving. So I have a lot of audio books. More Than a Year in Provence is in my all time top 3. 5 shining stars for the book. 10 stars for the audio!

More Than A Year in Provence Endless Tour de France Travel Volume 1 Christopher Strong 9780615858098 Books Reviews
Couldn't finish this, a sophomoric young voice. Probably not for the mature reader.
To compare this to Peter Mayle is to insult Peter Mayle terribly. This book is a series of vignettes, many of which have nothing to do with Provence, but all of which tell you what a smart, lovable guy the author is. In fact, the real theme of the book is "wow, what an inconceivably cool guy I am!" This book won't tell you much about Provence or France. It's labeled as "Book One." Let us all hope the author decides to stop here, and not waste any more trees (or electrons) on his public relations campaign.
The spelling, grammar and punctuation in this book were horrendous.
I was very disappointed. I expected little vignettes about life in France particularly in Provence.
I never thought I would give a 2 star rating to a book about Provence. While I did enjoy aspects about the book and learned things I did not know from my previous visits to France, the very off-putting and frankly irritating style of writing brought my rating down. Repeated usage of "yer" in place of your, "ya" for you, "o' " for of, "gonna" for going, "jus' " for just, "ole" for old, " 'n " for and. And then there are portions of sentences that are just wrong, wrong, wrong "got's to be"..... and then there's
"four out of every five people in France be bureaucrats". BE bureaucrats? Really?
When I'm reading a book, especially one about an area of the world I love, to keep pen and paper nearby to note irritating aspects reallllllllly diminishes the enjoyment. Please, dear author, lose the
"folksiness" in future books.
Bonjour from Strasbourg!
Seven and a half months ago, I ran away to Europe from the Excited States with two grand to my name. That cash lasted all of three weeks. Starting in Copenhagen, Denmark, I have journeyed by car (mostly hitchhiking), bus and train (mostly cheated) and a 500 km bicycle trip. I have been here in Strasbourg since late May, and my feet are getting itchy. This little volume has helped me refocus on travel (I'm in an Emmaüs village). Soon I will move on. Thanks for the encouragement.
I love this book! And you'll love it too if you're into life in the French Countryside. But - heads up - it's not a tourist guide. But a collection of personal experiences of an American Filmmaker cycling the French Country back roads. Giving us a real non-touristy account of French Country Lifestyles.
While there are no recipes (darn!) Christopher Strong (the "bicycle gourmet") does share some off the beaten track info on exceptional places he's visited - as well as some off the beaten track tales of French History and Culture that for me were definitely in the "can't put it down" category.
It's an easy enjoyable read. Always laced with the Author's dry self deprecating humor. Which, for me, got a little tiring. Particularly his catch phrase "and isn't that the best way?" However, not to pour cold water on an excellent and truly unique collection of life experiences well told. 4.5 stars from me.
