Mother of the Moonrat The Bowl of Souls Book 5 eBook Trevor H Cooley
"Mother of the Moonrat" is the fifth and final book in 'The Bowl of Souls' series by author Trevor H. Cooley. This Kindle e-book was approximately 470 printed pages and sold for $3.99 at the time of writing this review.General theme (some spoilers)
This finale details the slow and steady build-up to the final battle between Ewzad Vriil and the group of mages/wizards/bonded group led by Justin. In addition it details the ever growing rift between Ewzad and Mellinda (Mother of the Moonrats), and it also follows the continuing developing relationship(s) between various members within the 'bonded' groups.
Some thoughts on "Mother of the Moonrat"...
The Pros:
1.) an episode that was well written and appeared to be well edited as evidenced by the fact I could find very few, if any, grammatical or syntax errors.
2.) lots of action and encounters, both large and small.
3.) several important characters that could be seriously injured or killed. Adding a degree of realism to the story, given the type and scope of battles endured.
4.) especially appreciated by this reader was the background information given on how Mellinda gradually turned to the Dark Prophet.
5.) map... a good map of the area involved giving a sense of direction, distance and topography.
6.) cover art... a beautiful and stunning image for this final book. Bravo Trevor!
7.) best segment of the book... Chapter 27 detailing some of Lenny's (the dwarf) past. Exquisitely told in heart rending detail.
The Cons: (some minor concerns)
1.) I didn't understand the reason for or the necessity of Justin's maze dream (Ch 21)
2.) I thought a couple of topics were repeated excessively. e.g.
a.) Imp's imploring Willum to name him... a discussion that carried over for several chapters.
b.) similarly in Chapter 32 when the word 'tea' (as the drink) seemed to reoccur more often than what was needed.
c.) I cringed every time Justin called Gwyrtha, 'sweetie'.
3.) the only character I was disappointed in this book (and the series) was Gwyrtha... a character with so much potential throughout the last several books, but she just never seemed to grow or mature much beyond a level equivalent to that of a young child (at least as evidenced by some of her conversations with Justin).
4.) and finally, a concern I had throughout the entire series, was the way in which this otherwise terrific fantasy adventure frequently bordered on a work written for a Young Adult (YA) audience. As evidenced by the near superhero status of some of the main protagonists AND the fact they always had something or someone that just happened to have whatever 'miracle' was needed to overcome the battle d'jour.
Impressions:
Don't get me wrong, despite my lengthy list of concerns above, I really liked this book/series. The entire series had a consistency to it that made each book blend seamlessly with the one before and after it. Not an easy feat for a lengthy five book series.
This book was well written, had lots of great encounters and couple of intriguing villains in the characters of Mellinda and Ewzad Vriil.
Trevor Cooley can write and tell a very good tale, but having said that, I drool at the thought of this book using rugged, seasoned adults figures in place of the young and inexperienced (and often immature) protagonists we find here. Obviously a personal and subjective opinion on my part.
As it is... 4 Stars.

Mother of the Moonrat The Bowl of Souls Book 5 eBook Trevor H Cooley Reviews
Great storyline since book 1, wonderful dialogue and variety of characters. Plots per book were good. This book started off a little rushed, then kind of tapered down in the middle. The ending was very rushed and I couldn't believe that the climax was very...well, anti-climatic. Felt way too rushed and forced. Somethings were just too farfetched given the previous books' writing style and rhythm/logic. Disappointed ending, but great storyline. I felt that there was a sense of action/urgency in this book and the book did a fairly good job with keeping up with the tempo; however, it is different than the other books because there was less plot building and interesting dialogue. Not to say that the plot building and dialogue that was in the last book was poor, just not as detailed or long as the previous books. I welcomed the introduction of new characters and returning characters. Saddened about one particular death. I appreciate Cooley's writing and am glad i read the story. Just disappointed about the ending; very weak and felt too rushed with inexplicable and unrealistic details.
Could you put a map up on your website, I was getting a little lost?
Also, Edge's swords sound awesome, but I'm having a little trouble visualizing them, particularly how they would look in a sheath? A drawing maybe?
I really enjoyed this series. I started it about a week go and it was so good I just couldn't stop going from book to book. This was a delicious feast with all of the elements clicking.
A special nod goes out to the description of the battles and individual fights, the author brought me right into the action.
A critique would have been the overlong back story of Stardeon and Mallinda. If you wanted to write a prequel, go for it but I was more interested in plot advancement and I think that could have been cut down considerably. Ewzad's back story was done better as it was shorter, not overly detailed but gave you important highlights.
A thumbs up for the development of the side characters and villains. I got nervous from time to time when we started seeing princess Elise, the imp, Beth, the bonded and others getting so much page time because I thought there just wouldn't be enough space to do anything but leave me hanging. I was wrong, the imp in particular was very entertaining.
(Pretty obvious) Spoilers ahead
Enough is left unfinished that I assume that another series is forthcoming, here are a couple of things I'd like to see (cause you know, I'm sooo important -))
1. Justin's magic. The series did a great job bringing him to the place where he could clearly be seen as a named warrior. Named wizard; not even close. The slight glimpse we got when Justin was accidentally allowed to have an offensive breakthrough was just a one time flash in the pan and it left me hanging.
2. The scralag. If you're just going to hold Justin's magic back then just beat it ghost, you're not doing anything useful or interesting.
3. No Melinda. Her and Ewie are dead right? She was a great villain but the process of killing her would be cheapened if she came back, as seen in the foreshadowing at the end of the book.
4. Johnate's land. I'm going to assume the next series will be set in Johnate's land, but just in case you were thinking other wise I'll include that as well.
5. I hope that Justin can continue to demonstrate swordsmanship skill apart from the magic of the blades. Don't get me wrong, I think his swords powers are really cool, but just touching an enemy with your blade (admittedly something that takes skill in itself) and then blowing up their arm kind of eliminates the excitement of a duel.
6. More Talon.
